The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
