Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
