An defense minister has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in any vehicles.
Security Guidance for MoD Staff
During a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss classified information while travelling in China-made vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a issue in all modern cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Defence Context
This revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This broader security environment underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in every areas of government operations, from transport use to communication practices.
