TikTok Grants Users Power to Limit AI-Generated Content in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to reduce the amount of AI-created content appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the company disclosed that it now features more than 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Testing and Rollout

The update is being tested over the next few weeks before a global release. This advancement aligns with a surge in content created by AI, driven by recent video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Recent reports that approximately one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a popular video site only show clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this material is deemed “AI slop”, a phrase for substandard, factory-style content that is typically nonsensical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, including digital art to informative clips, and we intend to provide users the power to adjust the amount of that, according to their own choices,” said a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

The service disclosed that there are presently 1.3 billion videos on its network identified as artificially created. In total, over 100 million media items are uploaded to the app daily, making clips made by AI a minor part of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be in a position to reduce or increase the amount of AI content they view by accessing the content preference option in the application and choosing AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be modified under the filter encompass current affairs, style, cosmetics, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s rules oblige content makers to identify convincing AI-made content, and it prohibits malicious deepfakes of celebrities or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is unmarked can be removed under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the platform will now attach an artificially created watermark to content created with its own AI tools, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This measure is designed to deter users from attempting to circumvent the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is also introducing a $2m educational fund for professionals and organizations to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will assist charitable organizations specializing in teaching coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has supported its safety measures, amid controversy over intentions to lay off numerous content moderators in the UK. TikTok is planning to eliminate 439 jobs in its user protection department in the UK capital, with trade unions and internet security professionals raising concerns that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A company official clarified that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but AI can protect employees by removing the most distressing content before it gets reviewed by people. TikTok reported a notable drop in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the previous year due to reliance on its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s highly necessary to limit contact with harmful content as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is proving valuable process content quickly.”
