Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.

Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
